The Battle of Makerfield
Usually, I would be skeptical when anyone tries to characterise a single event as a political path being forged, permanently altering the course of our direction. But Makerfield seems to be the real deal.
The place has become a political battleground to stand up to government, make attempts to claim more seats, and influence voters by making more promises (the likelihood of which will not be kept). Today is election day for the Makerfield community, and whilst it may on the surface seem to be “just another by-election”, the meaning of what party wins could alter our politics indefinitely.
Labour’s Andy Burnham is running to become an MP, and Sir Keir Starmer for the leadership. It then becomes apparent that this isn’t about Makerfield, its residents, the community, but a play at wider politics and an attempt to influence decisions at the highest levels of government.
That is why there is so much interest in Makerfield. Reform are keen to win to solidify their gains across the North, as seen in this year’s local election. The Greens are hopeful, after Hannah Spencer’s successful campaign for MP in the Gorton by-election back in February.
The issue here is - will the community split the left vote and allow Reform to gain control? Or will Labour or the Greens become successful in their endeavours?
A Labour win would signify a) acceptable government challenge and b) hope for the party, given their low approval ratings since the 2024 election.
Burnham is popular - he is a widely respected local figure, and his personal record could swing the vote in his favour, regardless of people’s views on the party. In addition, his time as Greater Manchester Mayor proved that he delivered what he promised.
Makerfield is a bed of political power, and its residents stand at the forefront of changing British politics. This one by-election could change the Prime Minister. It remains to be seen if Burnham can pull enough votes, despite Labour’s reputation in recent years.
Even now - reports are in that Reform has reported Andy Burnham to the police for breaching lockdown rules in 2021. This is clear evidence - Makerfield matters so much to the point where smear campaigns are being established. The potential to revolutionise our politics is apparent - whether this is towards the left or the right.
Makerfield, as you’ve guessed by now, isn’t your average by-election. When the polls close and the results are counted, we’ll know what the residents of a small area have decided for the country.
