True Love: Reality or a Dream?

This was the part of the question for my last Philosophy class.

I had so many fruitful conversations since the layout was speed style, allowing participants to talk in detail with each person for five minutes.

One perspective that stood out to me was, disregarding the actual answer to the question, that it would all depend on whether you actually believe in the concept of ‘true love’.  The person remarked that it would be difficult to tell since they have not experienced it, and therefore, how would they know?

Their point about true love expanded to discuss what actually makes a love ‘true’. We agreed that this was an individual or shared experience between the individuals involved. But the concept of ‘true’ is malleable because at this age, you may class someone as your true love, but in ten years with hindsight, you may instead recognise it as lust or puppy love.

It is the same to me with the concept of someone or something being the ‘love of my life’ (colloquially referred to as ‘loml’). How can someone be the love of your life if you have yet to live out the remainder of your days? Your life needs to be over for you to then assess and see who, if anyone, would be deserving of such a place. Calling someone the ‘love of your life’ is therefore premature in my opinion, because what if you meet this so-called love later on?

Again, this all hinges on the proposition that true love is real and exists. There are couples who get married and stay together for decades. But then there are equally couples who get married and break up after decades together. Does that mean true love has a limit? Or was it never true love to begin with?

So, is true love a reality or a dream? It really depends on who you ask. It really depends on what you see true love as. It really depends on whether you believe in concepts such as fate and destiny and invisible strings.

It really depends on you, perhaps one day meeting YOUR true love.
